Use an inflated balloon as a noise source, then use a trip device with a pin that will prick the balloon. That can be a rubber band with a thumb tack inserted, a set of clothespins with string stretched across to hold it back. Then trip the string and the rubber band is released to put the tack into the balloon.
Alternatively, fill the balloon with water. Put the balloon over where their head will be when they trip the trigger.
Be aware that any fright can kill or lead to someone falling, or getting very angry.

Get a flashbang grenade and tie a string to it. When he triggers it, it will make a LOUD bang, and then flash VERY brightly, scare the living **** out of him. But it could make him go deaf, and I think they are illegal!
