your modem dials a number connecting to a server of your provider. then, your computer asks the server to direct it to the site you type in your browser. the information goes over your phone lines to the server which gets the info you want from the source computer of that info and then directs it back (over your phone lines) to your computer. fyi the info sent by the server comes out as a weird sound when you pick up your phone because it isnt sound but information and your phone decodes the information trying to turn it inot sound.

Your computer uses your phone line to call another computer, just like you use the phone to call a friend. It is incredibly slow. DSL is much faster, and cheaper than cable.
