No I do not.......they are learning testing and not what actual life out there is like.....not everyone is meant to be a rocket scientist...someone has to flip the burgers......I put the blame on the schools and teachers....you need teacher that really give a "caca" about their students....put all the blame on the home...keep using that excuse to justify that you really don't care and can't teach a lick anyway.......at school they are your children......too late for 7 grade on up.....start in the sixth and every year expand it to the next year with the simple approach that the teachers will teach.....most of the teachers are losers that couldn't make it anywhere else so they settled for a teaching degree.......in the 50's we had 10 boys and 41 girls in my class and all were Spanish speaking.....of the ten boys 6 graduated from college and the other four did well only one due to Vietnam got messed up a little...don't remember the girls much (hadn't dicovered them just yet).......but all of my teachers back then were mentors....one a Mr Dominguez especailly.....thought us how to learn and compete with each other always wanting to be #1....they cared......I hate to say it......maybe if Mexicans thought Mexicans ....Blacks thought Blacks ...White to Whites......maybe by going back wards this might be the solution.....but it would not only not happen but a stupid idea......but those teachers cared for their own and "thought" them to survive and drive to better themselves......we don't have that now......the teachers find someone or something else to blame besides themselves.......I say send the teachers back to school and learn to "teach" and to "inspire" their students!!!!!........GO YANKEES! STINKIN RED SOX!!

The idea behind it is great. I think we need to make sure children do not fall in the cracks.
The way they are doing it is ridiculous. Standardized testing to death is not the answer. Kids are not learning the material they are only memorizing it and than forgetting it once they do not need it anymore.
Regardless there is still the fundemental problem of money. Inner city school districts are still getting less money. THey can't hire the best teachers, get the best supplies, or even up keep their buildings properly so it is a successful learning environment. WIth this different more wealthy school districts are still going to score higher and better because of better resources.
I think a better answer is to fund the schools in a way where each school district is equal. This way all students are on an equal playing field as far as resources. I think we should set up a system where each district gets X amnout per child. This each district is spending the same amount per student. If you give x amount to each district smaller districts will have more money.
We as a nation need to place more priority on education. We are like 16th in the world in terms of education. I believe I read somewhere in England people go to college practically for free because it is well funded. I think if we place it as a priority we can better our school systems and we won't need no child left behind. Which is just a mediocre attempt to placate people

The "no child left behind" idea is a good one, but its implimentation leaves alot to be desired. Too much beaurocrazy and red tape, and the funds end up not making it to all the "children we aren't leaving behind." Consequently some are being helped, but many are still looking in from the outside so to speak. Maybe there could be a smaller organization or more community based foundation and fund for the children left behind. I don't have all the answers, but like the idea that people are discussing this very important issue. Hopefully, something can be done to fix or reorganize gov't education (not just for the children left behind).

Yes. The government should be involved. We pay so much money in taxes, that any help that goes toward the children is positive. With that program many failing schools have raised the bar and challenged themselves, parents, teachers and students, to do better. No school wants to be on the failing list and they take it personally when they are. In the end, the child benefits. All children should also be given the same educational opportunities. This should be regardless of their parents income.

No.
I am really irritated that all of the classroom time is spent on trying to make sure every single kid is caught up.
We live in an area where there are some kids who don't even speak english. They have recently immigrated and are in the schools. With this act, even they have to be able to pass the tests. So the teachers spend the whole day catering to them while the rest of the kids just sit around and wait.
They should rename this act "No child gets ahead"

In theory, NCLB is a good mandate and has good intentions. The biggest problems that I have with are: (a)NCLB is not fully funded by the government, although when it was signed, there was full congressional support for fully funding NCLB and (b) not every child responds to testing. I teach children with mental retardation (on the severe end of the spectrum) and have to create a "portfolio" of work that the student has done in order for it to be "graded" instead of the students participating in standardized testing. These children need to have time spent in instruction on social and life skills, but instead we have to spend an enormous amount of time doing paperwork and creating BS portfolios instead.
