Communism survives, somewhat, in China, North Korea, and Cuba, to name a few. I think it's a facade for totalitarianism, and always was.
Information about the fall of Soviet communism is easy to find. There are lots of books and websites. You should have no trouble.

To paraphrase a G.K. Chesterton quote: Communism didn't fail; it was just never tried.
Which is just as well, because, even if it were tried, just as Marx and Engels outlined, it'd never work.
Why? Two word answer: human nature
Capitalism, which appeals to ambition and greed, will always win.
Maybe that sounds cynical, but I prefer to call it realistic.
