Yes, water retention typically causes weight gain. Women can gain up to 10 pounds, actually. It's best to drink a lot of water. Believe it or not, the more water a woman drinks during her period, the less she retains. Women often take over-the-counter medications (like, Midol or Pamprin) that reduce bloating (among other things).

Yes but it is all water we retain water because our body holds onto sodium, try eating things with less salt and less things that come from a package and you will lose weight:) I do this every time I know my period is coming up so that I can maintain my weight and not carry around that big ol bloated feeling around with me. I like to feel comfortable and the bloating sucks.

It's definitely the water...but also a lot of women have more cravings during menstruation. Also when pain is severe...we tend to move less.

Water weight. 99% of women retain a couple of pounds of water the week before their periods - more so if you crave salty stuff. (Ergo, the bloated feeling and why you pee so much the first couple of days of your period.)

Best way to avoid - lower the amount of salt you consume and drink more water for the week before your period.
