although I still use warm water (or sometimes hot) for whites, there is no reason these days why you can't use cold water for your laundry. The detergents on the market these days are all excellent, and most are formulated to work well regardless of the water temp.

I use cold water to clean all laundry that has any color to it. Warm water tends to set stains quicker and wash the color out of colored materials. I use hot water for white laundry because it will help to brighten the whites.

Hot water is for whites, cold is for dark colors to prevent fading and warm is for other colors. Check tags to see what the manufacture recommends. If you use the wrong temp. of water your clothes with shrink or fade.

I use warm for everything but sheets. I wash my sheets in hot. Mostly, because I forget to check the setting and don't want to wash something that will shrink on hot. Clothing lables all carry washing instructions and will tell you the best temperature to use.

do you have a top loader or front load washer? warm will work almost as well as hot and save you money. most soaps activate the enzymes in water that's 68 degrees and will clean well. if you have construction dirty clothes get a front load washer LG or Kenmore Elite he4t don't try to save when buying the washer and look at consumer reports also.

I agree with whites on hot and colors on cold.

Hot water is good for whites (underwear) because it is more likely to get the, well, you know, off your laundry.

Cold water is good for colors and stains. Hot water will fade colors and set stains in the clothing so they don't want to come out.

if you use cold water for everything you colors with stay and your whites will be brighter. When you use hot water it causes the fabrics in your clothes to get all bent out of shape and distorted and actually can cause them to stretch. Also dry on lower temperatures to keep your clothes nicer longer
