Usually companies do not want employees at that level to give opinions about past employees because this may potentially open the company up to some sort of litigation, especially if a manager maliciously reports information causing that past employee to miss an employment opportunity. I would put the number to the HR department on my applications instead of the direct number to my past manager. Usually HR department will only verify dates of employment.

But do your own investigation, have someone contact your past manager or HR department posing as a potential employer. You'll know first had what they will say. If it's inappropriate, address it with the HR department and an attorney if necessary.

DO NOT TELL your prospective new employer about personality conflicts. It would be a kiss of death. When they call they are mainly looking at the quality of your work. The old employer may be glad to get rid of you. However if they deny you a chance at a new job ask the reasons why and ask them for specifics.

Because people are known to tell lies. If someone did not like you for what ever reason they could tell the people who wanted to hire you all kinds of lies about you and your character. The only thing they are allowed to ask is if you worked there which is a yes or no answer and would they hire you back which is also a yes or no answer.
People can and well lie about you especially if they don't like you and it has nothing to do with you being a good employee.

basicaly all a former employer can do is verify that you had worked for them. they can not say anything derogatory about you. theres the rub, all he/she has to do is say yes so & so did work here, no i would not hire him/her again
