You make a few good points and you can search various websites, news sites, political sites and others to ind deep and well defended answers. My response to your Q as to why are we still there...Can you imagine what would happen to Iraq (political, oil, the people, military, invasion from Iran or Syria) if we simply just pulled out?

I think they believe if they keep our minds occupied with other stuff - like Saddam we won't remember bin Laden or Al Qaeda.

We're there because of many reasons...one that Bush needs to finish what he started another has to do with oil. And, because the longer he stretches this out...the more he puts the fear of terrorism in us --- the more rights get taken away.

Why don't more people do research on the Goldwater presidency. There are so many interesting similiarities. This is what the Republican party has been trying to accomplish since (probably) Goldwater!

For target practice!

"Gosh, I just don't think I ever said I'm not worried about Osama bin Laden. It's kind of one of those exaggerations."
—Bush, during the final presidential debate, attempting to refute Kerry’s claim that the president boasted he was not concerned about Osama bin Laden.

"So I don't know where he is. You know, I just don't spend that much time on him... We haven't heard much from him. And I wouldn't necessarily say he's at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don't know where he is. I- I'll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him."
—Bush, answering a question about Osama bin Laden at a March 13, 2002 news conference.

One very real reason we are still there is because if we pull out, all the people who helped us will be murdered when the government gets overthrown!

And, not all the citizen want us to leave. That's just what the liberal media would like you to believe.
