Also, any recommendations on jazz artists for Alto? I'm more familiar with tenor players.

I don't think there is much difference in learning how to play, the fingerings are quite similar as are the mouthpieces. I think the biggest difference is that the tenor is a bigger instrument and will require more air flow, so if you have weaker lungs alto might be best.

The fingerings are essentially the same for all sorts of saxophones. True, there are a few differences, but nothing major at all.

The alto is easier to carry around though! And it is less expensive.

Also, the alto may be easier for you at first if you have smaller fingers. I play the alto saxophone, and I have played the baritone saxophone (but I mostly play the alto), and it requires a lot more stretching to play the baritone saxophone sometimes.

Most jazz bands have at least several different sorts of saxophones. I would recommend looking for bands as opposed to artists if you are good at recognizing each instrument in a band.

Tenor is easier, plus, if you can play that, you can play the clarinet and the flute and the alto sax and the bass clarinet etc...

I played both and I don't think one is easier than the other...

my friend played the sax for awhile and he said they were about the same difficulty level
