I can recommend an awesome B&B that caters to couples... it's called Romantic Riversong and it's in Estes Park, at the foot of Rocky Mountain National Park. My husband and I were married there and return every year for our anniversary. Check out their website. I highly recommend the room called "Indian Paintbrush" with their special "swinging bed!" Have a great trip and congrats on 40 years!

Stay off the Interstates! Go through Estes Park on 34 and head west on old 40 and then head south on hwy 139 towards Grand Junction. From there head to the San Juan Mountains and Ouray, Co. Take the Million Dollar Hwy to Silverton and on into Durango. Stop in Pagosa at the Hot Springs but avoid the Lobster Pot as it is too hot (110). Go home via Wolf Creek Pass and through Colorado Springs. Stop and see the Red Rock formations near the Springs and go up Pikes Peak. Is that off the beaten path enough? Go in mid September when the Aspens are turning. Stay tuned to the weather as I have driven home in the snow the 3rd week in September before. It is rare, but it does happen. Have a great trip!! I'm telling you all of this and I live in Ohio.

As others have said, Rocky Mountain National Park and Estes Park are a must.

There's gambling at Central City and other old mining towns in the mountains.

In Aspen, you can take the chair lift to the top and hike around.

Glenwood Springs is also great - natural hot spring pools to swim in and/or white water rafting.

Boulder is a great college town with falls just outside of town, or take in a Colorado University football game (go Buffs!).

Or, you could just go to Lookout Mountain (just outside of Denver on 285) and make out with all the other couple who go there to ostensibly look at the city lights!

Look for some good b&b's in Denver (my favorite closed). If you like to hike hike into the hot springs outside of Aspen (I think they are called the Strawberry Hot Springs). Redstone Castle near Carbondale is very romatic if it is still open. Take a river trip on the Colorado in Glenwood Springs or even better and overnight trip throught Westwater Canyon.
