If they are registered somewhere, pick something off the list. If not, a gift certificate is great, then they can get what they needed that they didn't get. It is also fun for the mother to get some bath products for after the baby so she can pamper herself a bit.

It may sound kind of chinchy, but the things I got at baby showers that was most helpful were
A.) What to expect-the first year (It's a book-I would not have survived without it)
B.) GIFT CARDS!!!! I was able to buy diapers, formula...whatever I needed.
C.) a gift certificate to a nice restaurant for me & the hubby to enjoy a nice evening out after the baby was born. That's when money is tightest, strss is highest, and the need for a break is the greatest!

Oh my, where to start, there are tons of great ideas, I got so many things at my baby shower, but personally I like to the expectant mother / baby the more uncommon that they are not going to get like 6 of at their shower. Diapers, diaper bags, wipes, bottles, blakets and clothes are all very common and the expectant mother usually gets bunches of them. Things like gas drops and infant tylenol are nice to give, because alot of times the expectant parents forget to pick them up before the birth and need them soon after bringing the baby home from the hospital. They actually sell gift packs of all the different infant medicines in the baby gift departments. It's also nice to get things that the baby isn't going to use right away, like clothes a few sizes too big for the next season. I also think it is nice to get the expectant mother / father something small for themselves since their days of pampering themselves are over for the time being *grin*. Something like a gift certificate for a dvd rental and pizza or something like that.

I am a new mother, and I will tell you some of the things I wish i had gotten at my baby shower. These are the things that no one thinks about, even the mother, until you actually need it.
-hangers
-cloth diapers (work well for burp cloths and then later as cleaning rags)
-bigger sized clothing (think sleepers and rompers from 6 months and up)
-Baby Einstein cd to help put baby to sleep
-Baby Einstein videos for older babies so mom can have some free time
-a disposable camera to keep in the diaper bag for cute pics
-a tub spout cover
-something for mom (massage gift certificate, new robe, maid service gift certificate, etc...remember that they're the ones doing all the work!)
-baby sunscreen and bugspray
and of course there's the usual stuff
-onesies
-bibs
-bottles
-diapers
-wipes
-clothes
-socks
-towels
-blankets
-toys
I hope this helps!

Here are a few essentials that would really help mom and dad out! Diapers, wipes, Baby shampoo, Baby body wash, Baby face cloths.
Also, if you are going in on a gift with a few people, get a Rubbermaid container, the tall ones with drawers and wheels and fill it with essentials. I had one of these set up beside the couch. I kept extras, like clothes, wipes, blankets and diapers in it. It was very handy to have all that stuff near by instead of going all the way to the nursery to get the things I needed.

Anything they will use all the time. A gift bag with wipes, ointment, diapers etc. The nicest thing I got at my shower was actually a new cotton nightgown and robe set for me. It was great to have something new after having the baby!

Diaper and wipes, diaper rash cream, baby wash, etc...you may also want to think about a care package for mom. Maybe some slippers and a robe for the hospital, a bottle of wine (if she is not breastfeeding, if she is sparkling grape juice will do) and a pamper set for after her stitches come out (i.e. bubble bath). You could also do something like get her a gift certificate for a salon for a new hairdo, nails, facial, etc...

Get a baby bathtub and fill it with little baby goodies. That way, they can use everything including what the gifts came in. I've done this before, and the whole thing was around $50.00. Here's what you would need:
A cheap baby bathtub
A couple burp rags
An outfit
A few baby bottles
A pacifier
A receiving blanket

Are they registered at Babies R us?
If not, go get a basket or even a baby bathtub and some diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, baby wash, baby powder, and baby washcloths and burpy cloths. Put all this stuff in the basket or bathtub and wrap it up. It's all stuff that'll get used and diapers and wipes new parents go thru like WATER.
Or, get them a gift card for some clothes when the kid's bigger. Everybody buys newborn stuff, aim for 6 month old clothes or larger. Babies grow FAST.

diapers in a bigger size or clothing for a bigger sized baby. Baby shower gifts tend to lean towards a newborn and they grow so fast that a lot of time things like diapers and clothes aren't used but the parent is wishing for bigger stuff.
