I'm more of an Intel fan myself. AMD isn't bad though. I've used both.

However Intel is about to come out with their new line of processors and from what I've been reading, they're suppose to surpass and blow any current or upcoming AMD out of the water. Why? No clue. But they're suppose to run faster and cooler. So you may want to wait to see what Intel does/doesn't have in store for the IT world.

i would use an Intel core 2 duo. they rule. they will blow almost any athlon 64's out there away, especially the non dual core ones. As for the 64's, what speeds you get depends on what kind you get. Anything below a 3500 i consider slow, but that's just me. For a rule of thumb, the numbers when you look at processors give you a good indication as to speed by relating it to intels p4. for example an athlon 64 3500 would run as fast as a 3.5ghz, and an athlon x2 4400 would run as fast as a 4.4ghz p4, and so on and so forth. but, the core 2 duos are the absolte best. we ran tests on them at our local computer shop and the only processors out there that could even come close were the amd fx60 and fx62. it was utterly amazing. best part: they star at around $250.
Hope this helps!

I've always been partial to AMD. Go for a 64 bit porocesssor since that is the emerging technology.

AMD is cheaper and has the same general specs compared to same level Intel processors. Intel might have a longer life, but if you get to the point where your CPU is dying, its too old for the currently level of technology.

AMD or Pentium are both good. Just stay away from Celeron and Duron if it's still out there. I guess it all depends on the motherboard you have too.

Either will work pretty well, but make sure you don't scrounge on the other components. Go for name brand motherboard, sound, video etc.... Makes a huge difference.

Oh just get a Mac. Don't even bother trying to build a PC.

Mine is 2gigahertz. I dont recommend overclocking.
Reliability suffers.
Plus life is shortened. Heat and electronics are incompatible.

The future is 64 bit.
The new intel is faster but. . . .

yes AMD 64 would be good for the buck. But dual core is good for multitasking. only appreciated that while gaming and my antivirus kicked in with no loss in game performance! great!
