Crystals of diamond have a grain similar to wood which means it is harder in one direction than another. When cutting diamond the diamond powder used on the cutting disc is random which means some grains are showing their hard direction and some their soft direction. The diamond to be cut is placed on the disc with its soft direction parallel to the rotation of the disc which allows the hard direction particles of cutting powder to abrade the stone being cut.
