Someone died, perhaps in your local area. The flag was at half-mast in front of police station one day, so I assumed an officer died.

Every ones answers are probably right..... Someone has passed away. Here in NM when we lose a soldier, and we've lost 22, everyone flies the flag at half staff out of respect.
