You're better off getting a name for yourself out there so they come to you. If you go to them, often you'll be shooed like a fly. The reason for this is because they often don't accept unsolicted material - it protects you and them. They instituted this policy for fear of lawsuits - if you give someone your tape and someone they work with comes out with a song that sounds a lot like your, you'll sue, right? Exactly.
Get out there - get as many gigs as you can. Make friends with the booking people at the clubs - often times if a name act comes to town without an opener, the clubs bring in their own. If you can get to a music convention, do it. You'll be able to network and maybe get your stuff played at the convention.
Good luck!
