What was the cause of the Danish Invasion during the Anglo Saxon era?

I know there were many Danish Invasions, but what started the whole thing?

At first the Danes went to England and Ireland primarily to loot, and fight. (Things they enjoyed doing) Later they started to settle in areas they could control.
