Floor embossing, and leveling compound. It is very much like plaster of Paris. Use an acrylic add mix for faster drying, and better adhesion.

you can put new linoleum right over the old using a special glue located at any home store. But the best way to go is to either remove the old linoleum or to put down 3/16" plywood over the whole floor and nail or staple it every 4 inches. Then you proceed with the new linoleum

Youve got two options... underlayment, or floor leveling compound.

The underlayment is about 1/8th to 1/4 inch thick, and is made, usually of mahogany. Use screws to secure it to the floor, so you won't get those annoying squeaks when nails or staples start to back out, hehhehe.

The floor compound is a masonry, or cement like mixture. You spread it into the gaps, filling in the grooves between squares, and in the pattern inself...a little light sandomg, and you are ready to lay your new floor.

Have Fun!

I always pull up the old linoleum before I lay new.
