I don't know any websites but to help you out I got some tips for you.
Assuming you already know how to play, I'm not going to go into too much detail on the practice thing.
The first thing you got to do is have a few songs together. Make sure that you are prepared to go big even if it happens the first day. If you don't then you'll seem unprepared.
Next, record some songs and get them on a CD and give it to your friends. This will help spread the word. Once you're big enough in your own area, then start selling CDs instead of giving them out. To each person you sell to, see if they have any connections in the music business. That's always a plus.
Do some parties and whatnot. Let people hear you live so they like the sound.
Send a demo to a company and if you can't get anything out of them. Try a radio station. If you offer some money, they could play a song for you every now and again. Keep sending demos. it will take awhile to break through but just be patient.

Well, for starters ... do your friends want the same thing. If so the best thing that you can do, is practice together and get a routine together that you all can agree on, and then start entering local contests (if they have any in your area) or put out some flyers and what not advertising yourselves. Once you are confident that you have got what you need, then try entering some of the larger national contest that they have.

what kind of band?
Basically...
1. instruments...guitar, bass&drums are a necessity. keyboards are optional.
2. a decent name.
3. a good singer.
4. someone moody to write songs.

a drummer, a bass guitar player, and some guitars ( 1 rythmn and one lead) if you want to jazz things up add horns or keyboards. You'll need amps and a P.A.System.
