The mean is the average.
Take all the numbers in your set and add them together.
Then divide that number by the number of numbers in the set.

Ex. 1 , 4 , 6 , 7

1 + 4 + 6 + 7 = 18

There are 4 numbers in the set, so 18 / 4 = 4.5

Therefore, 4.5 is the mean.

The "mean" of a set of numbers is the thing we usually call the "average."

Specifically, it's the result of adding all the numbers, and dividing that total by the number of numbers you added.

For instance, the mean of 1, 3, 3, 10, and 11 is (1+3+3+10+11) divided by 5 (which is how many numbers we added). That's 28/5, or 5.6.

The word "mean" is more specific than the word "average" because there are other kinds of averages. For instance, there's the "median," which is the number in the middle when the data points are written in ascending order. In our case, the median value is 3. There's also the "mode," which is the entry in the list that occurs most often; in our case, the mode is also 3.

There are even other kinds of "means." The mean we talked about above is the "arithmetic mean," but there's also such a thing as a "geometric mean," which involves taking the nth root of the product of all the numbers (where "n" in our case is 5). In our case, 1x3x3x10x11 is 990, and the 5th root of 990 (that is, the number that comes to 990 when you multiply 5 of it together) is about 3.973. (You can check that yourself: 3.973 x 3.973 x 3.973 x 3.973 x 3.973 = about 989.9.)

But without any modifiers, the word "mean" is usually assumed to mean "arithmetic mean" -- your common everyday "average." Hope that helps!

the average of a group of numbers
which means you add up the numbers
and then divide by the number of numbers there are for instance
1 2 3 4 5
i add these up to get 15 and then divide by 5 because there are 5 numbers all together and i get 3
so
1+2+3+4+5 = 15/5 = 3

Mean is the average of all numbers. You would add up all the numbers and divide it by how many numbers there are. Ex: 2,3,4. Add 2+3+4 = 9. Then take 9 and divide it by 3 - the number of how many numbers there are. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean for more info.
