Mel Gibson has had a problem with alcohol before. The Bush girls were young and probably given a 'slap on the wrist' because of that (being the prez's daughters didn't hurt either).
Mel is paying for his foolishness and bad attitude. He's asked forgiveness and deserves it. IF he hadn't been driving drunk and hadn't gotten pulled over his anger towards the Jews probably would have never come out.
But he was caught and it all happened. In his defense, when he did the 'Passion' he was BOMBARDED by the press and MANY Jewish organizations (well, many Jewish people) who constantly tried to accuse him of creating an antisemitic movie, which was ridiculous. ALL he wanted to do, and had a deep NEED and desire to do, was to created as true as possible a depiction of what the Lord suffered for us and all people (any who believe in Him). It WAS a horrible story (in reality) and Mel depicted it with the most realism of anyone else to this point. Lots of people said it was TOO gruesome. Well, it WAS gruesome and CRUEL beyond immagination. But it DID happen and probably in much the very same way.
I have no doubt that he's been 'choking down' criticism ever since for it and as anyone who's ever gotten drunk knows, your tongue gets VERY loose when you're in that condition. I think it was just a lot of angry frustration that spilled out and nothing more. I do NOT believe that he's antisemitic at all. And I'm sure he greatly regrets his ridiculous actions.
Try and just let this guy get well and hopefully get his life back in order. He's got more work to do. And best wishes to the Bush daughters also. Hopefully they've learned as well and their experience(s) will serve to make them better adults.

You know, they made a big deal out of this whole Mel Gibson incident. Personally I think it's because he's responsible in a big way for "The Passion of the Christ" and everyone knows he's a Christian. So this sounds like hypocrisy.
The fact of the matter is, he was obviously upset about the war, he got way too drunk, and made some comments while intoxicated he shouldn't have made.
Many people drive drunk everyday. I used to ride around in my car smoking a joint. Many people get drunk and say bigoted things, some say them while they are sober.
There are plenty of people who get drunk-stops and get a lenient sentence. Not just celebrities. If he is indeed a true alcoholic (I wouldn't doubt it), then he obviously has a serious problem to work on. Alcoholism is not a cop-out, we are still responsible for our actions if we are drunk, cause we chose to get drunk.
Who cares what Bush's daughters got. If you want to hear about alcoholics and what happens to them go to an AA meeting.
