For a living room or family room, 52". For a smaller room like a kid's bedroom, 42-48". For a very large room (25' long family room, for example) consider using two fans.

5-blade fans balance better than 4-blade.

The bottom of the fan or light should be at least 7' from the floor otherwise taller people can get injured.

Hunter and Emerson fans are made in America. Support domestic manufacturing.

Do not forget the mounting box! The ones used for lightweight ceiling lights are not strong enough to support a fan. Make sure the box is connected directly to a ceiling joist; otherwise you'll have to get a special braced fan box.

Hope that helps!

Go to Home Depot. The sales staff there are good there. There are so many different types you can lights of your choice with them too. The instructions are in the box and they are fairly easy to install. When I have all my tools laid out and am doing a whole house I can usually to one in 20 to 30 minutes.
