I just bought a new laptop off Ebay. Everything works except the external CD/DVD drive. When I put a disc in it tries to read it, but just keeps spinning until I press eject. I tried many different discs and they all do the same thing. When I press play on the drive icon it just freezes the play function. According to the device manager the drive is functioning properly. I tried this drive on my old laptop and it works fine. Do I need to install the drive or should the laptop automatically detect it? What should I do?

You may have a firmware conflict. It can be caused by many things such as; drivers or I/O conflict issues. You may want to go to the drive manufacturer's website and update the drivers for it.

Also, BE WARY OF EBAY COMPUTER PURCHASES. THEY CAN SOMETIMES BE BAD SYSTEMS AND YOU NOT KNOW UNTIL YOU GET IT.

Go to the device manager and uninstall the external CD drive
If it hooks by USB, also uninstall all the USB ports
Reboot the PC and let it redetect the USB ports
Plug in the CD drive and hopefully now it will work

you might wanna try reinstalling the software/drivers for it. fir uninstall everything associated with it then reinstall everything. if it's connected through your USB port then you may have to upgrade those drivers as well.
