The best fiction novel I have ever read is The Count of Montecristo by Alexandre Dumas.
I realize (if you've never read this novel) you might asume (thanks to Hollywood) that it's a tright story of revenge and swash buckling with dumb, melodramatic dialogue and boilerplate romance.
But it's not.
It's spectacular.Believe me
Subplots, and seemingly irrelevant events are all weaved in perfectly together, like an exquisite and very intricate carpet.
Although it is long (and a little slow getting into at first) it's worth the effort. This book has everything you will ever want in a novel.
Crime.Passion.Betrayal.Revenge. (But a different kind of revenge, a revenge where he doesn't so much hurt his enemies as reveal their iniquities; allowing them to do in themselves).
And if you give it a try,and stick with it through the beginning, you will find that you won't want it to end--
Because you have been seduced completely.

Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov.
It's a 999 line poem and a commentary on the poem, according to the jacket-- but it's really a lot more interesting than that.
Also love:
Barry Hughart's three books (Bridge of Birds, Story of the Stone, Eight Skilled Gentlemen)
The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King
Anything by Stanislaw Lem
The Alienist by Caleb Carr

The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. It shows you a life of a farmer and how he went from rags to riches. But with that change so will his personality and what effect will it have on his family? Very interesting. You can borrow it in the public library or buy it in the nearest bookstore. Award winning author.
