A few quick tips about eating with a hiatal hernia:

Eat smaller, more frequent meals, instead of larger meals
Don't eat for at least two hours before bedtime
Sit up for at least one hour after eating
Don't bend over right after eating
Avoid foods that can trigger heartburn (acid reflux)

I have got a hiatus hernia, I find the foods that affect me are onions, citrus fruit, rich food, spicy food, fatty foods like pastry and fish and chips, sauces and mustard. The only fruit I can eat is grapes, plums and nectarines.
I am not saying the same foods will affect you it took me about 2 years to work out the culprits that bothered me.

I found if I ate ham and added something new to my diet I found out if it affected me.

I find ham, chicken, pork, potatoes, plain pasta basically bland and boring foods.

The pain I get is so bad I put up with a very restrictive diet.

I looked on the Internet a few sites mentioned alcohol and coffee.
Cucumber, peppers and some I mentioned. They also mention eating small amounts of food and don't eat before going to bed.

Hope this helps. :-)

I`ve had a hiatus hernia for about 10 years. I avoid spicy foods.Don`t eat curries ,chilies etc. Different foods will affect different people. I now find i cannot eat Weetabix for breakfast,it "murders me".Also i avoid anything fatty,e.g pastry.I find that upsets my system. Avoid doing too much after eating if you can.Especially anything that involves bending over or any strenuous work/exercise.Don`t eat within two hours of going to bed.If you find that Losec doesn`t help then go back to your GP and tell him/her. Believe me i know how uncomfortable this condition is.You have my sympathy. Hope you find some relief soon. Good luck.
