Car occassionally would stall out but I could always start her up again. It tried to turn over but couldn't ....it has a new battery.

Doubt it. If your car starts back up again then its not the alternator. May be something like a distributor or something

Alternator powers the battery. If the lights are on its not your battery. My guess is its fire, fuel or oxygen related. Fire= Check the spark plugs (probably fouled out), fuel filter could be clogged, or an oxygen sensor has gone out and would create the problems you spek of(stalling)

If you turn the ignition, and all you hear is a click and nothing else, it is probably the alternator. If you get a noise like the car is starting but it won't turn over, it is probably something else.

It could be the the battery is not charging. Have the alternator output checked and see if the battery is charging.

check to see if there is oil in it, you may have just sent the motor to the junk yard

no, it is the tranny and it's old. Get a new car!!!
