Students offer a great deal to the life of a city:
1. A lot of places are open late at night. I can get a burrito, pizza, etc. at 4 am.
2. The general mindset of the town is laid-back and non-judgmental. Younger people are typically more open minded and accepting.
3. The towns are usually diverse because people come from all over to live there.
4. Property values are high because of all the competition for rental properties. Real Estate investors love this.
5.College kids have the best weed.
6. They contribute to the economy. College kids are eager to spend their parents' money.
7. Cultural benefits. Colleges promote exploring diverse cultures other than our own.
8. Progressive thinking. Though idealistic, college students tend to be forward thinkers and don't accept things because they are the status quo.
9. Information. Living in a college town means that I have physical access to one of the best libraries in the countries. I can do reasearch on whatever topic I chose.
10. Sports- Theres nothing like being at being in a football stadium with +100,000 on a nice fall day.
11. Attractions. Colleges sponsor museums, public lectures, symposia, etc.
And the best reason for living in a college town....HOT COLLEGE CHICKS!! Every once and a while I take a stroll on campus and wish that I could be 19 again.
Need anymore ideas, let me know.

Well, before UCF in Orlando, Fl became a college....the outer limits of Orlando was barren. And I will explain why.
There are 45,000 students at UCF. There are businesses in this city that are located no where else in Florida because of the students. Students bring more money to a city, not just short term either. They spend money on fun, food, and relaxation. The cost of living in Orlando has sky rocketed due to the influx of higher paid individuals in the community. More degrees, better jobs, more dough. Its a cycle, a good one to be more specific.
Now that's the financial pic. If you want to consider the social aspect that college students have on a city, that's not as good as the financial outlook..but its important just the same. College students tend to party a lot....so Orlando has a great night life. Unfortunately..its dangerous as well. Drinking and drugs have resulted in numerous deaths over the last few years.
I like cole h's answer. Its on point.

In most university towns, students make a significant contribution to the local economy.
However, in general, most students make little effort to contribute to the local society.

In New York, I know that some help keep drug dealers and fighting up. Sad but true. Though, good students add education, intelligence and literature to the city.

easy targets. seriously there's always articles about how college kids get killed and mugged.
But seriously I would write about how students might inspire someone to pick up their lives and go back to school, remind people of their kids (college kids would be more effective to write about)that they might not be in contact with or etc., and they keep places of education and all that in business like libraries, bookstores, museuems, etc.
Good Luck
