You've ruled out a lot of genres...

Sarah Dessen is great. I love her work. My favorite is The Truth About Forever. Just Listen is her newest book. Definitely read all her books...I've never been disappointed with her books.

Laurie Halse Anderson. Speak is a great book. Probably her best. But she's also written Catalyst and Prom. I enjoy Speak the most though. Realistic YA Fiction.

Joan Bauer is great. Another realistic YA fiction writer. Hope Was Here is probably my favorite. But Rules of the Road and Squashed come in a close second and third. Her work is great!!! I just discovered her this summer in the past six weeks I've read everything she's written.

Caroline B. Cooney can be great. But be careful what you pick up. HIT THE ROAD her newest book is very funny. It's realistic YA. But she also writes some historical, some fantasy, and some science fiction. So you can't just go by the author on that one. You have to know what the book is about. Also her book The Girl Who Invented Romance was surprisingly good to me. It was written in the late 80s but recently got republished with a new cover. Anyway, I found myself really enjoying it.

Sonya Sones is another great YA writer. I loved her book WHAT MY MOTHER DOESN'T KNOW.

Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta
Looking for Alaska by John Green

Two suggestions that you might be skeptical about...

Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Part realistic/part fantasy or supernatural. Twilight goes beyond any definition of genres in my opinion. Bella Swan is your "typical" teen who falls in love with a not so typical classmate, Edward, a vampire. Even if you've never read a vampire book in your life...it is entirely possible for you to fall in love with this book. I had never read a vampire book. And my previous experiences with "supernatural" type books was anything but pleasant...but I really trusted my friend who said "you will love this book." And she was right. What makes it good...what makes it practically perfect...is the *romance* between the characters. If you enjoy how Sarah Dessen creates her characters and creates "real" relationships between them....you'll love Stephenie Meyer.

The Uglies trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. It is a dystopic novel. Meaning set in the future and society is not quite what it appears to be. Lurking behind its seeming perfection is a dark secret. What makes this book great??? It's up to Tally and her friends (all 15-16 year olds) to uncover the secret and 'save' society from itself. The problem...most don't even suspect that there is anything wrong. Anyway, I liked Tally's adventures. They were very exciting. It also provides a nice perspective on current issues as well...
