But they object to the phrase, because it basically says that the government is endorsing (respecting) a particular religious belief as valid, and in particular one that is directly opposed to their personal beliefs.

It's no different than how many Christians would react if the bill said "In Satan we Trust", or "In all the gods and goddesses we Trust". Or how most current Americans would react if the bill said "In Allah we Trust".

The object to the government choosing sides and advocating one particular religious belief as being worthy of government sponsorship.

I doubt it, money is money. However, any good atheist, if there be one, just likes to make waves -- putting the world down, and saying, "hey, look at me, I'm different and I want preferential treatment."
