My friends and I stopped trick or treating about 19-20. The only reason why we stopped was because that year one friend dressed up in our old high school tennis uniform with the school name and logo on it and we ended up ringing the door bell of an old teacher that recognized us!!!

Some college buddies and I went trick-or-treating in the neighborhood around the college when we were all 18. We waited til most of the kids were done and only went to houses with the porch light on. Most people thought it was cute we were doing that (instead of being out drinking or causing trouble, I suppose) but we did get yelled at by this one lady for being too old. *shrug*
Funny thing is that now that I'm the adult (30), I take my nieces out trick-or-treating. I still always dress up (kid at heart) and people insist on giving me candy. Go figure.

Wow, I see trick or treating as a variable event, there isnt a law that dictates the age of stopping. Heck, one year, I saw a forty year old father trick or treating, wearing a pumpkin costume. The point is, dont stop just for the reason of stopping, stop if you get tired of it, or feel if you keep going trick or treating, you might loose the childhood magic that is started from.

I believe as long as you are willing to dress up and go house to house begging for a piece of candy, you are not too old to trick-or-treat. Age is a state of mind. Of course, whether or not the treat givers are willing to give you a piece of candy is the chance you are going to have to take. Also, you better have a tough skin because some folks will definitely be making comments. And, I wouldn't advise going out alone (without children) or people may think you are a robber or child molester.

13-14. Then you offer to take the kids next door trick or treating, so their parents can hand out candy, and follow big groups of people so the people handing out candy don't notice the kids you're with, give the kids an extra bag, and say "Oops, forgot this one". Repeat until you hit the age where it's more fun to hand out the candy to kids than get it yourself (this usually comes when you have a job and can buy all the candy you want anyway).
More or less. :D
ETA: The point is, always find an excuse to wear a costume.

When you should stop trick-or-treating?
Well if you just go with your family maybe, but if you have continuously have a group going then it's definitely okay. Taking you kid sibling okay too. Also going with BF is totally acceptable.
Just have fun, nobodys' answer really matters, if you want to keep being a kid go for it! I know I do!

After 13, people start looking at you funny and saying " Aren't you a little old for trick-or-treating?" This year if I get any kids older that 13, I'm gonna say " I bet your allowance is more than my paycheck- buy your OWN damn candy!"
