I've lived in Az my entire life and I think Sedona is the best place to vacation. It's the kind of place that you can stay at some fine resorts, eat at fine restaurants, and do some shopping for things you can't find anywhere else in the country. Or... you can rough it and go camping and hiking. Either way the scenery is some of the best you'll find anywhere.

Assuming you like camping, I'd say hit the Mogollon Rim country...lots of nooks and crannies to get away from holiday weekend crowds, plenty of public land to camp just anywhere, as long as you don't mind doing your business in the woods.
Go north of Payson/Pine and find Forest Road 300...check a map, you'll have to do some homework, but it's a trip you won't forget. Most outdoor stores should sell a book (and map) published by Arizona Highways...called The Mogollon Rim.
Oy, responding to above answers...Labor Day weekend? Avoid Sedona and the Grand Canyon like the plague!!! Those places will be an absolute zoo!

Grand Canyon is one of the finest NPs in the US. The El Tovar Hotel right on the rim is around $100 per night depending on when you go but it is unlikely you can get one for Labor Day. Consider Carlsbad Cavern NP in NM. That is a bit further but extremely nice. If you want unusual, consider Canyon de Shelly in northern Arizona. If you want a tour of that place you need an Indian guide. I would make a big loop trip and pick several things to see along the way. If you go to Calif. your costs go up because of the distance you have to go across the desert. You have so many beautiful places in AZ and NM. If you want a great ghost town go to Mogollon, NM. You could get a ghost town book and make a loop trip exploring them. Have a great trip!

I just loved AZ and only got to spend 4 days there. In my time there I went to Phoenix - Herd Museum, Desert Botanical Gardens. Went to Sedona (BEAUTIFUL!!!). And went to an archeological dig site in Globe, AZ.
And - in general - did alot of driving all over the place.
I didn't get to the Grand Canyon, but wanted to.

Maybe visit the Grand Canyon? I'm sure there are some hotels there that are not too expensive & you could walk around a bit. They have parks that you guys could camp at! Just bring a tent (I think you have to pay to park your car) & plenty of liquids!

I guess it's still too hot at the river on labor day, have you ever been to Santa Fe? It's a pretty nice little town.
