no they do not. they do have a small "security defense force though."
they are forbidden to have a military because of their Constitution does not allow it.
the Japanese chose not to have a military, per se, because of World War 2
they did not want the militaristic politicians to gain power again

Not very likely to happen. Japan's constitution, wrote after WWII, prohibits Japan's military from going any where outside of Japan. Our presence there is a security blanket for them. If we pulled out the economy on Okinawa would collapse. U.S troops, family members, and civilian contract jobs pump billions into the economy of just that one island.

It has no military but it does have defense force. This is not a military force but it has tanks, assault helicopters, fighters and bombers and a whole lot of men in the same clothing marching in step. But its not a military. Oh by the way it helped occupy Iraq but it was only defending Japan I'm sure.

We wrote their constitution at the end of WWII. The US didn`t want a repeat of their behavior and didn`t allow them to have a military other than a small self defense force. We guaranteed their defense and until recently they were not allowed to expand any military forces beyond that. They now have a real army, Airforce, and Navy.

Japan has what is called the Japan Self-Defense Forces, with about 200000 members in three branches. They haven't been in any real combat situations but has been in some international peace-keeping forces. Apparently its limited role of national defense and maintaining peace internationally does not violate the renouncement of war in the Japanese Constitution.

because of their fierce fighting, their war crimes and the fact they nearly did us all in during worldwar II the allies had them sign a treaty that they would never again have a standing military.
unfortunately, the current u.s. administration has been encouraging them and other of our defeated enemies of ww II to once again build up a military.
bad idea indeed, i would say.
but then, again, it seems like there are quite a few bad ideas coming out of our government these days.
i only hope we all survive the next few years.

they are forbidden, by international constitution (thanks to the loss in WWII), from maintaining an offensive military. they are allowed to have a defensive force to protect themselves.
