They will usually walk in and ask if you're ready for it. You might have to ask though.

When you go into the hospital, be sure to let the doctors know that you will want an epidural. Usually they will give it to you when you're 5cm dialated. If the pain is too great before then, sometimes they will give it to you before that. The reason they wait until 5 cm is because sometimes the epidural can slow down the progression of labor. If your delivery is expected to be normal, you can get it sooner. I had my epidural at 5 cm with the first one, and 4 cm with the second. Wonderful drug!

most of the time they will ask you .but if you really want one it is up to you to make sure they know it ahead of time.although i would suggest you do not get one and ask for something else for the pain.i have three kids and all three i had an epidural.it really doesnt hurt going in or anything it is just a scary thought.after the first child i thought i had done the right thing getting it and even after the second but omg after the third child i knew i shouldnt have gotten the first, second,or third..the pain in my back has been terrible and doesnt get any better over time.it has been six yrs.since my third child was born and some parts of my back and legs are still numb.the feeling comes and goes and the doctor says it is from the epidurals.and there isnt anything that can be done to fix the problem.so i just wanted take the time to let you know what could happen that the doctors dont tell you anything about.so think about the long term effects other than a few hrs.and also second and third one didnt help to much.i pay everyday for that mistake ...but i love my kids .good luck to you in whatever you decide to do

usually at your 1st appointment they ask if you want a epidural during labor "you can say yes or no" you can change your mind when the time actually comes they will ask you again while you are in labor. They won't just assume you want one you have to consent to it. Some women are very scared of them I've had two I've never had back pain after or anything else. My labors were induced which is more painful I'm glad i had that option 4 pain relief. I plan on getting one with this baby. It's a personal choice.

You will have to request for an epidural. Normally and epidural will be given to you when you have dilated 4 or more cm. They will ask you at that time if you would like an epidural. Some doctors will even ask you before hand. Trust me it is worth it though!!

Tell the nurses at the hospital you want an epidural. You will see them more than the doctor. It is there responsibility to follow through with your request and contact the doctor. Of course if your doctor is there ask. You are a consumer, you wouldn't buy a car without asking so take charge of your health care.

It really depends on you. The doctors and nurses will ask you if you want to have an epidural but if you decide not to the doctors will respect your decision and will not inject that to you. Its still the patients' right to decide.

Take care.

with both of my children who were born in different hospitals in different states, the doctor/nurse came to me and told me that if I wanted an epidural now was the time because I was within the window to get one. They won't give it to you right away and if you wait too long they can't give it to you. I recommend letting the nurse on duty know you want one as soon as you are able, when you check in to give birth. In my case they came to me and asked if I wanted one because it was time if I did. That may not be the case everywhere though.

Have you discussed having the epidural with your doctor? If you have and said that you want it, then it will be done on doctor orders when you go in for delivery. They usually dont wait till you are in too much pain to give those. But if they wait too long then you are going to have to go the hard road so be sure to talk with your doctor at your next visit.

the doctors generally wait until the patient is dilated about 3 - 4 cms before doing an epidural.

ALOHA!!
I AM A 38 YEAR OLD MOM WITH 4 DAUGHTERS, 3 PREGNANCIES. ( MY LAST PREG. WERE TWINS THAT I DELIVERED NATURAL- VAGINAL)
IN MY EXPERIENCE BOTH WERE IMPLEMENTED. OUR FIRST, THEY RECOMMENDED THE EPIDURAL, WHICH UNFORTUNATELY, ( AND NOT TO SCARE YOU ) THE ANISTESIOLOGIST WAS HORRIBLE. HE DIDNT HAVE A CLUE WHAT HE WAS DOING, SO AFTER HUNCHING OVER MY BELLY, & HAVING HELLASHUS CONTRACTIONS, ABOUT THE FOURTH TIME OF PRICKING ME, HE JAMMNED THE NEEDLE IN RIGHT SIDE OF MY SPINE, WHICH CAUSED MY ENTIRE RIGHT SIDE TO GO NUMB, & FEEL PARAYLIZED. HE WOULD SUCEED FINALLY UPON A THREAT FROM MY HUSBAND WHO IS ONLY ABOUT 6'1 220 PACKED OF MUSCLE.
OUR SECOND CHILD, I REFUSE TO GET AN EPIDURAL, THEY FINALLY ASKED ME WHEN MY CHILD'S HEAD WAS CROWNING & I HAD BIT MY HUSBANDS FINGER WHICH SENT HIM SCREAMING OUT OF THE ROOM. ( I BIT HIM BECAUSE , NOT HAVING THE EPIDURAL, THE ONLY THING I TOOK TO EASE THE PAIN WAS DEMEROLL, SO AS YOU COULD IMAGINE, I WAS SCREAMING JUST A BIT. HE GOT EMBARRASSED, & I GOT EVEN.BESIDES, OUR SECOND CHILD JUST HAPPENED TO BE THE BIGGEST WEIGHING IN AT 9LBS 2 OZ. NOW COME ON, HOW THE HECK ARE YOU SUPPOSE TO POP OUT SOMETHING THAT BIG, WITH NO DRUGS, AND BE SILENT. HOW DARE HE!!
STILL OPREHENSIVE BECAUSE OF THE TRAMATIC EFFECTS LEFT BY MY FIRST EPIDURAL,I STILL OPT TO NOT HAVE AN EPIDURAL..WITH OUR LAST DELIVERY, BECAUSE THEY WERE TWINS, THEY KEPT ASKING, I KEPT SAYING NO. THAT BAD EXPERIENCE THE FIRST TIME REALLY DID ME IN.. I HAD VOICED MY REQUEST, UNTIL THE DOC. CAME IN, LITERALLYFEW MINUTES BEFORE THE TWINS ARRIVED, THE DOC CAME IN & ALMOST GAVE ME NO CHOICE, HE SAID THE SECOND TWIN WOULD ALMOST MOST CERTAINLY TURN & START HEADING BACK NORTH, WHICH IN THAT CASE, HE WOULD HAVE TO TURN HER AROUND & WITHOUT AN EPIDERAL, WELL, I STOPPED HIM BECAUSE I GOT THE VISUAL, & SAID LETS DO IT. TO MY ENJOYMENT & RELIEF, IT TOOK HIM HIS FIRST TRY, & I FELT NOT EVEN A PINCH.20 MINUTES LATER OUR FIRST , 7 MINUTES LATER, OUR SECOND. BOTH WEIGHING IN AT 7LBS EACH. THANK GOD MY CHILD BEARING ARE OVER, & I CAN ENJOY OUR 4 BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS. SO, I GUESS I WOULD SUGGEST LETTING THEM KNOW RIGHT AWAY SINCE HAVING TO BE A CERTAIN CENTERMETER OPEN, IT WILL HELP THEM IN THE LONG RUN. I HOPE THAT HELPED SOMEWHAT. SORRY FOR THE LONG DRAWN OUT STORY.
GOOD LUCK & GOD BLESS!
