Could be many things. Newer cars could be more difficult to pinpoint. The dealer has a special computer to plug in to your car to find out what is wrong.

The check engine light is the most generic indicator on your dashboard. It has multiple meaings, from as simple as the "make sure your gas cap is on tight." of merely a reminder that you should bring in the car for some routine maintainence. Or, it may be trying to warn you of a very serioius problem.
The only way to be sure is, first, check your owner's manual for anything that you can do yourself. Once you have done that, and the light still is on, you need to get a mechanic to do a diagnostic with his computer. The computer can read the various coded that trigger the light.
It's kind of like Russian Roulette. You may be able to drive the car another hundred thousand miles with no problems, or the engine may seize up the next time you are on the highway.

Guessing will not help you If the light comes on the computer has found something wrong. Changing parts will not fix it unless you find out just what made the light come on in the first place.
Go to Auto-Zone and have the car scanned. It is free. Then after you find out what is really wrong either you repair it or have it don. Then after you have don't the repair, take it back to Auto-Zone and have the cars computer reset.
Just because you make a repair if you don't reset the computer computer, it will act like it did. You must reset the computer for the computer to recognize the repair
Hope this helps

It could be a number of things, but if its coming on intermitantly then usually (not always) it is the O2 Sensor. How ever the best thing that you can do is take it to a mechanic, or better yet a parts store like Advance Auto Parts, Oreilly's, AutoZone or any of them and have them run a diagnostic on your cars computer (its free at thes places usually) ... it will list all the error codes that are listed in your computer and you will be able to make your decision of what to do from there.

The "Check Engine Light" is mainly associated with the O2 sensor (oxygen sensor). It can come on intermittantly for many reasons. If it stays on, you will want to run a scan tool to check the codes. Those are fairly inexpensive, but if you don't have the skill, take to a good mechanic.
