I get 'em often, is it something I eat? Is it a form of heart-burn?

Hiccups are a spasm of your diapraghm (the lining under your stomach). It spasms causing you to have the hic-cup noise.

The proven way I have found to get rid of them every time is to drink out of a glass backwards, so you are tilting the glass the opposite way from your mouth. Works, trust me!

I've read that hiccups are spasms of the sphincter just below the diaphragm and may be caused by swallowing too much air when eating or drinking. That's why people tell you to breathe into a paper bag, as you would for panic attacks. That way you are breathing back in some of the carbon dioxide that you exhale. The idea of holding your breath is a good one, but every time I try that I hiccup. Here's an odd remedy: eat a teaspoonful of sugar, putting it into your mouth and swallowing as it is melting. I've tried it, and sometimes it works. If your hiccups don't stop soon, I would suggest you go to an Urgent Care doctor (one you can see right away).

Hic-ups are simply the twitching of your diaphragm (the organ, not the contraceptive device). My mom always taught me a fool-proof method to get rid of them. I promise you, it has worked 100% of the time.

Drink 17 sips of water (or whatever liquid is handy). Do this continuously without taking a breath. Then hold your breath for 10 seconds. Of course you'll feel a bit short of air, but that's only temporary and it'll be worth it.

Hiccups start from you swallowing too much air. And you'll keep hiccupping till the air bubble pops in your system.

The best way to stop hiccups is to swallow 3 packets of sugar straight or hold your breath till you almost pass out.

Trust me the sugar works every time. Hiccup! Almost every time.

I don't think the medical community knows exactly why hiccups start.

If I eat a spoon-full of sugar they go away.

It's a muscle spasm in the diaphragm. Personally, I never ever get them, but my wife does. Swallowing a teaspoon of dry sugar usually cures it for her.

I don't think anybody truly knows how they start, but my girlfriend suffers from them fairly often, and she's found that sucking on a bit of lemon is the best therapy!
