ABC's and 123's. Never too early to start with character recogition.

If you have different 'centers' put time into a basic design that you can mix up every once in a while. If there is a kitchen, put in a 'window' and a rod so you can shange the curtain with the seasons. If there is a block area, put a city-scape against one wall, so they can drive their cars through the block city. If you have an art area, put up color wheels and draw arty things on the wall like berets, paintbrushes, crayons, etc (also can be done with large stickers they sell at teacher supply stores).

As for basic wall colors, I would go with a gloss (easy to wipe down) then put in large geometrics in all of the basic colors (never to early to start with shape/color recognition).

If you are really brave, you can leave a wall blank and let the kids paint it with watercolors. You can wash them off as often as you like, and it gives the area a very kid friendly atmosphere.

Go for a classic look- going for the "what's hot cartoon character " look gets dated very quickly. It should be safety oriented for kids, basic white or cream with bright color accents, lots of room for running around during inclement weather, easy clean surfaces( walls, furniture, and floors); definitely a space children can personalize (cubbies or an art wall), a space reserved only for nap time ( makes MUCH easier for getting them to sleep), and if possible a simple entrance/exit to an outside area. Also make sure it's hadicapped accessible if you deal with special needs children.
