(the points I make below arent necessary directed to the american people, i just tend to be very anti-american policy).
1) You are responsible for the majority of conflict in the world. You swan around perceiving threats and lying to your own people about it charging in there gung-ho, guns firing, missiles killing attempting to wipeout anything that disagrees with you.
For instance take Afghanistan. You took control of the country and effectively pulled out when the fighting had calmed down. You still havent killed Osama bin Laden, hes still at large (well you cant confirm it at least), and now the country is falling into disrepair, thousands of British troops are now planning to do a tour of duty there to clean up your mess. The same as Iraq you're losing control yet you're urging your troops to come home at the same time. I see an emerging pattern, does anybody else! Next stop Iran?
2) You advocate democracy and peace but support military campaigns that will lead and has indeed led to the deaths of thousands of civilians.
3) As the worlds only superpower by default and by their own pressure on other nations not to get any more powerful, you have a duty to the rest of the world to ensure that they are able to survive. Since your economy controls a vast majority of the worlds economy and the dollar is the worlds most traded currency, your country is de facto spearheading rescue efforts etc.
Hows about if you keep out of the rest of the world, the world wont bother you when they're trying to survive. Become your own little isolated country again as you did pre-WW2. Do us all a favour. I for one am not jealous of you. I'm happy where I am here in England, I can survive just fine.
ETA: In response to someones France comment:
We here in the rest of the world find Americans just egotistical and introverted. You say France would be speaking German if it werent for you? You werent at all concerned for the future of Europe before Pearl Harbour. Thats only when you got involved when it affected you directly and you felt you had to save the world. Is it a bird, is it a plane, no its a P80 flying GIs overhead. Only now they're B2 Spirit Stealth bombers destroying homes and people.

America is mostly a country of the unbelievably stupid, naive and ignorant.
However, it has become rich and powerful because of a land rich in natural resources (taken with much bloodshed from the natives) and because of a small minority of brilliant scientists and intellectuals who are held in contempt by the majority who take advantage of their achievements.
America has been so provably wrong on so many issues it is absurd and they are too stupid to see it.
1. They now talk about solving the problems of the Middle East after voting in a president who initially said the rest of the world didn't matter to Americans (and wanted to pull out of the Palestinian/Israeli peace process- the Palestinian situation being a prime recruiting sergeant for terrorists)
2. They ignored the rest of the world who warned that they should take stock and plan before invading Iraq (and many of these supported eventual military action.
3. They said they don't believe in Global Warming (the fact that they would ignore their own Academy of Sciences shows how anti-intellectual they are).

I'm always amazed at the infantile simplicity of this question, and the equally simplistic answers. Please, please do not offend our sensibilities by saying others hate America because it's free. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, all of Western Europe are free. Japan is free. South Korea is free. Taiwan is free (for now, at least). I could go on and on.
Here's the answer: those that hate you hate America because of foreign policy, plain and simple. They don't hate American culture or most Americans. They also are the ones who don't ask for America's help. Example: Iraq.
And don't forget, many countries fought fiercely in WWII. Don't constantly belittle their efforts because the US entered late and was very strong. Everyone is grateful for your help, but try to recognize the efforts of others historically instead of constantly waving the flag.

We're hated for the same reason any schoolyard bully is hated. America thinks it has a right to rule the world, tell people what kind of government they should have, and what kind of God they should worship. Why should Americans (who only represent 5% of the world's population) squander 55% of the world's natural resources? Because we bully other nations into believing we're 'superior'. Unfortunately, our hubris, arrogance, avarice, and lack of any moral compass only proves what an inferior culture and society we really live in - concerned only about materialism, power, and wealth instead of taking a leadership role in environmental, peacekeeping, and ecological issues that will certainly affect this planet in the next few years.
We are, by far, one of the worst cultures in the world. -RKO-

Because American corporations and intelligence agencies have been systematically exploiting and manipulating these countires. If you study history you will find numerous instances of this. I recommend you pick up the book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man: How the U.S. Uses Globalization to Cheat Poor Countries Out of Trillions it will give you a taste of the US dirty tricks, you can also google Kermit Roosevelt for a better understanding of the US history in the middle east most critically Iran who we are poised to goto war with any day now.

I asked a non American that once and I got the best answer ever. Other countries hate America because America does not know that the other countries hate them. But in my opinion we are not perfect but we are the best damn thing out there right now! Look at France, if it were not for us they would be speaking German right now, but they are so damn arrogant they would never admit it.

The only countries that hate us have dictators and religious leaders in charge and they only hate us because they know they can't stop us from telling them to switch to a democracy or else.
Otherwise it boils down to some people hate us, some don't, and some love us. We just focus on the negative.
