Yeah it's just another label, but it's one the kids put on themselves.
EMO is short for "emotional." These kids are usually depressed, or at least willingly depressed. They aren't quite goth nor punk but a little mix of both along with regular retail. My son has his "Emo" days, but he wouldn't call himself that ever. He's way too happy and popular to be EMO.
The song your son is refering to is a dig on EMO kids, it's derogitory and not very nice.
Here's a link to the video: "I must be Emo": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPiv9jlz4do
The sad part is that society has left these mosly middle of the road kids without a real identity so they feel lost and helpless. Many of them have real social disorders, but some are just possers and dress that way to look "cool."
It's mostly a phase and unless your child is expressing serious emotional problems, nothing to worry about.

Emo. usually has nothing to do with sexuality and certainly not just applying to crossdressers. The Emo kid is an *emotional* really Emo for short. Usually it's used for men cause women are expected to show more emotion anyhow. There is the whole idea that it is the depression and freedom of expression kind of group so I do know that there are younger guys declaring bisexuality and stuff, and dressing in black but it really just is the emotional guys.

emo kids listen to a certain kind of "emotional" music, often loud and quiet, by turns, and very personal, in its lyrics, dealing with the frustrations and joys of everyday life (for the sensitive, at any rate). they are not goths, though they share some common ground, therewith. yes, it's a label for kids (kids sometimes in their forties!). they do NOT all cut themselves and take drugs, though, it must be admitted some do (as do cheerleaders, football players, high strung high achievers, and many other children and adults - our society can be cruel). their style is sort of a messy dressed down look, often including infrequently washed mid-length hair, and glasses (whether required or not, funnily), and in black, though a considerably more faded (and, again, unwashed) black than that of the goths, who tend to be somewhat fastidious, in their dressing and hygiene (of course, none of this is set in stone). the only cross dressing i've seen among emo kids (and i'm surrounded by them... and goths - i live in berkeley, california) is a general disuse of the skirt, among girls/women (ie, they're, conceivably, "dressed like men"). this, too, is not invariable, however. hope that helps. they're certainly no threat to anyone (goths OR emo kids).

Emo means "Emotional". Really they're kids with no real identity at all who are in need of serious psychiatric help. They engage in self destructive behaviors, are known to use drugs and alcohol, and tend to prefer halucinogenic drugs. Yes the "Emo" trend is to dress in a gothic style.

Tesra,
If you want, you can look it up on the urban dictionary. Do a Google. I think that it explains it pretty well.
