The origin of the bungalow has its roots in the Indian province of Bengal. There, the common native dwelling and the geographic area both had the same root word, bangla or bangala.

Like your definition best but in fact the word derives from Hindi word "bangla" from 1676. It literally means a house "in the Bengal style". Such houses were traditionally small, only one story, thatched and had a wide veranda.
