Can I refill the freon myself or is it not worth in portable units? I don't know how old it is cause it was there when I bought the house. It worked great and was cold for months but not that well anymore ow do i refresh this guy, the filter has been cleaned

It probably needs more freon but prior to calling in a repair man I'd clean the condenser if it gets restricted the unit can't cool properly due to restricted air flow. to clean it simply turn it off and spray it with a water hose and gently brush if necessary. oh yeah, the condenser is the thing on the exterior side of the a/c that looks kinda like a radiator. this should be done once a year.

clean the coil if you are low on freon then there is a leak and it needs to be fixed before any freon is added or you are waisting time money and freon and most places you have to have a license to even by freon

Freon is no longer available( in Canada) as it is toxic. I would bring it to a professional or buy another 2nd hand one.

if tis an old unit buy another in today prices they are cheaper -- 5000btu a/c unit around 90 dollars at Lowes , Home depot, compare the repair bill verus a new one

check the fins on outside make sure they are not dented & clean. can clean with hose & straighten with care.
make sure the air intake lever is closed [if it has 1]
new ac is cheaper than ac man.
