Depends on what you're doing, sexually, and on the, uuh, equipment and accessories that are in play.
If you're using a latex condom (a "rubber rubber", instead of lambskin or the newer hypoallergenic ones), or latex-based sextoys, make sure the lube is compatable with latex or the item will DISSOLVE. Literally. This is why Vaseline is NOT a good sexual lube. The same applies for any petroleum-based oil. When in doubt, assume that it ISN'T latex-compatable.
Water-based lubes, like Astroglide, are latex-safe. They can start feeling sticky and tacky after a bit; add a few drops of water. Some women with histories of urinary tract infections have problems with water-based lubes containing glycerin (which can be "sugary").
Silicone-based lubes like Eros BodyGlide and Wet Platinum are latex-safe and don't get sticky, BUT they will slowly mess up a silicone sextoy. If you're not sure what the toy's made of, cover it with a condom.
Try small bottles of different lubes till you find some you like.
Many people prefer a thicker gel-type lube for anal intercourse or anal play. You ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO use lube for anal activities--the more the better. And if you're doing vaginal fisting, plenty of lube is a great idea here, too.
Women may not produce as much "natural lube" as they go into their 40s and 50s, due to hormonal changes. This does NOT mean that they're less interested in sex, or that you're a lousy lover. It's just something that can happen, so you may have to use a little extra something.

The absolute best personal lubricant I have found are the silicone based ones. They are super slick, they tend to last longer than water-based lubes, they do not get sticky like a lot of water based lubes. While they tend to be more pricey than water based lubes, the cost evens out in the fact that you do not have to use as much or reapply as often. Silicone based lubes also make a fantastic massage oil.
I have tried all of the following brands and find no real significant difference in them other than cost. I am also including the website addy where I buy my lube on-line at a pretty significant price difference than buying them retail.
Wet Platinum Formula
Gun Oil Brand
JO System Personal Lubricant
Eros Lubricant
I-D Millennium Lubricant
Swiss Navy Silicone Lubricant

im not an expert by any means but i hear good things about K-Y if your going out shoping. however i tink it depends on how and where you are gong to use it, but seriously, you reach a point where lube is just lube. the majority of sex is mental believe it or not. fortunately for us cheap people this means less money spent on rediculous "preformance enhancers" like expensive lubes, but unfortunately, for you poor preformers this could be bad. honestly it probably wouldn't matter if you used toothpaste so long as you're having a good time with what your doing (and remeber be safe, use a rubber)

Spit works in a pinch, but many people like Eros. It is a silicone based lube and so many are against that being inside their body just like others are against Anti-perspirant because of the substances in those as well. There are many water-based lubes but one that I like is H2O. If you want a good slide than of course silicon is the best thing, but test it on yourself prior to heavy play because you might feel a burn from it. A friend of mine can't use Eros for anything anal cuz it burns him down there. You'll have to see for yourself, and have play, but play safe.

KY is crap, and spit is useless, just goes to show you what some people know. Use a brand called UltraGlide. You need to go to one of the so called "sex" shops to get it (or condom shops sell it as well). It comes it different styles, warming, increased sensitivity etc, but the best is still the normal version. That's the one in the blue bottle. Trust me, when you try it you'll never use anything else! If you can't get it then let me know and I'll send you over a bottle.

I've always used Elbow Grease. Never had a problem with it, so I'd say Elbow Grease is the best lube for sex.

Foreplay: make it wet and get right down to the point. The best lube is the juices.

It's K-Y Warming Gel. It's water soluble and safe with condoms. You can find it at Walgreen's, Eckerd, or anywhere with a pharmacy. Happy and safe loving! Also, try Astroglide! It works for me and my sweetie.
