Actually, some of the early humans (Ice Age era) used caves as religious sites. Since they probably worshipped the Mother Earth, going into the cave symbolized getting closer to Mother Earth's soul. But as for buildings, humans have built temples since the Neolithic era, the oldest probably in their farming villages around 6000 BC. One of the oldest temples in Europe still standing is the Tarxien complex on the island of Malta.
