Ulcerative colitis is either genetic or caused by a bad reaction to antibiotics or other drugs.

Usually the ulcerated portion of the bowel is removed if it does not heal.

If it is caused by medications it will usually heal if the medications are stopped.

If it is genetic patients can go into remission, but it is usually a lifelong problem that is managed with medications.

A diagnosis of ulcerative colitis is a very serious condition and I am thinking you need to contact a pediatric gastroenterologist as you may well need on-going care as your child ages. It would be a good idea to do this NOW.
