Excellent question!!!

The answer will largely depend on how much you wish to invest. Before going further, I am going to assume that you are looking to invest in a machine that will allow you to string for yourself and possibly family and a few friends. Assuming this is the case I can assure you the machine will pay itself off more quickly than you might imagine. With this as a backdrop I suggest purchasing as good of a machine as your budget will allow.

If you happen to be looking for a top-of-the-line machine I have to recommend the new Babolat STAR 5. This is Babolat's newest machine and it is a rock-solid performer at a reasonable cost for a higher end machine. Cost is approximately $3000.00. If you'd like more information please post another question and I'll be happy to give more details. I use this machine in my business. A picture is included at this link, http://www.gutsandglorytennis.com/home/gg2/page_797/brknot_now_-_instant_serviceinstant_gratification.html

Now I'll focus more on the machine I would recommend for a someone looking to string for themselves and maybe a few others. The machine I would STRONGLY recommend is the LaserFibre MS 200TT. This machine will cost between $700 - $1000.00 depending on the options you select, but it is well worth every penny! You can get great information about this machine at http://www.laserfibre.com

Why is it worth the cost? First of all the construction is solid. This machine is heavy-duty and will not bend or flex during the stringing process. Some of the lower cost machines are not of the same quality and will not give you as consistent of a string job. When looking at machine you have to look at mounting systems...in other words the method the racket is secured. Some of the lower cost machines have what is known as 2 point mounting. The machine holds the racquet at 12 and 6 o'clock. Some of the top of the line machines have 6 point mounting. The LaserFibre machine has 5 point inner frame mounting which is the safest and most secure mounting system currently in production. It is the best! Even better than my Star 5's.

The second major advantage lies in the pulling mechanism. On the lower cost drop-weight machines you have to have the bar perfectly horizontal in order to get a true tension. The LaserFibre system on their drop-weight is a patented system that is constant pull that allows you to get a consistent tension every time at all angles. This makes it much faster to use and also much more consistent than lower end machine. If you are stringing for yourself and others you want to achieve consistent results. This machine will allow you to achieve the consistency that you will need.

I could go on and on, but let me also point out that Laserfbre is the only string machine company that offers a 10 year warranty. You will not find another company willing to stand behind their machine for 10 years. Be wary of the electronic low-cost machines...if you have a problem down the road, which happens, what are you going to do and what additional costs will you incur?

Finally the LF machine holds it's value. They offer a 30 day no questions asked return policy and if you keep it longer, you can be assured you will get most if not all of your money on the resale market. The machines are built like tanks and those with knowledge of stringing machines are quick to sing their praises.

So, I would strongly recommend you stretch your budget and reach for the LF machine. Good luck to you and have fun on the courts!

I have an electric Ektelon and an electric Gamma sitting in the basement right now. The clubs I am involved with that do a lot of stringing all use Ektelons. They seem to be the most durable and when something does go wrong pieces are easy to get and replace. They string true to the tension you set. I would recommend a Ektelon even if you do not go electric.

Alpha, EaGNAs , Gamma are good brands. I would advise you to buy a Gamma, but they are expensive. But make sure that when you buy one that it is not a dropweight because it is harder to control..Go to ebay and type stringing machine so that you can have more information.
