She is telling the truth. A lot of woman have problems with their hormone levels. One of the most common effect of this is an irregular menstration cycle. Normally, it is supposed to be a consist 27-35 day cycle... and you can basically predict when your next period will start. However, if the is a hormonal imbalance, and periods on not regular, it can be a really hassle, if not a scare for many women. The uncertain of whether or not they are pregnant, or just stressed, makes having an irregular cycle, for lack of better works, sucky.
Being put on Birth Control gives the body a steady dose of hormones, and within a few months, will regulate a woman's cycle. And gives her a little peace of mind, knowing that if she IS late, there is a actually cause (pregnancy), rather then not knowing at all.
Hope this helps you out.

I started taking birth control pills before I ever had sex in order regulate my periods and stop cramps. I don't get PMS half as bad any more. (I have been on the Pill for 5 yrs now though)
