I don't know if this helps but I had a similar problem with a pontiac grand am I'am fixing where the ignition lock is located, not there but on the other side the ignition module assembly where the wires are connected..... it looked fine until I took it off and smelled it,then took it apart and it looked like someone took a torch and melted the inside!!! did that on its own luckily someone was around!! I pulled the fusses ..not hurt.. i took the starter off with the batery cable off.. it's shot.. the fix for both $ 98.00 the inside has a cam made out of plastic, if it melts a little, the wires don't connect., take the starter to autozone and test it or test yourself.

i own a repair shop in Tennessee,,and i know whats causing your problem,,you have a starter relay switch on the truck,,my neighbor has one,,and we have replaced 4 switch,s on it,,in less than 2 years,,,,he has even went back to get a new one from a dealer,,and that didn't help,,no one knows for sure what the problem is,,but i took one of the relays apart,,and looked it over,,and what i found was a small contact wire that was too small to handle heat when it was engaged,,,,we even got one from a junk yard,,just to see if we could make it go out,,and after 3 try,s with it,,we made it burn in to,,and this put the vehicle back to the point of no start,,after all this we replaced the safety switch on it,,and for some reason now it is holding up good,,now what it is trying to do,,is the ignition switch is not sending voltage to the relay,,ever time you go to turn it over,,you have to ,,click the key switch to make it start,,we have come to the decision that the switch,,and the rod that goes to it is damaged,,by wear,,and are going to replace the whole thing,,as for now we have it adjusted so that it will start,,maybe some of this will help you on your,s,,good luck with it.
