I'm looking to pick up a book on the Elder Futhark, if I can find one--I just went to Amazon.com and most, if not all, of what comes up are New Age, Neo-Pagan, Occult, whatever, books. I just want a scholarly book on the runes--nothing for spell-casting, tarot or whatever, just the runes, their meanings, their pronunciations, history, variations, that sort of thing. Anybody have any suggestions for a good read?

a good dictionary (merriam-webster's collegiate was my source, back in the day) and encyclopedia (the world book, ditto) will have some info. wikipedia, though not always 100% correct (or free of new ageism) has, on a quick scan, a scholarly enough few pages on 'em. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elder_Futhark (another page deals with the youger runes, and there's a bibliography and links to other pages - you really can't go wrong). one caveat - my browser's not displaying the symbols, correctly, so you may have to download a runic font, to see 'em. have (historical) fun! side note - though the new age stuff, today, is largely... unreliable... the runes WERE used, in their day, for magical purposes. did these "magics" work? it is not for me to say.
