I think I saw something on a program...the crocs from Africa- perhaps one species of them- can live in both salt and freshwater. Is that true?

I don't know whether Apirl has ever been to Australia or Africa, but she doesn't know what she's talking about when it comes to crocs.

Most crocodile species will live hapily in either fresh or salt water. That includes the Nile crocodile, which is the most common species found throughout Africa. American crocodiles (yes, there are crocodiles in the USA as well as alligators) will also happily live in salt water. All these crocodile species, and most others, have been seen swimming in the open ocean.

The other African crocodile species, the West African crocodile, will happily swim through ocean water up and down the coast and onto islands, but nobody is sure if it will live and feed in salt water.

There are species of saltwater crocs as well as freshwater crocs. Whether or not they can both live in them at the same time, I do not know.

The saltwater or estuarine croc (reference 1) is one of the largest, nastiest animals around, weighing more than a ton and a half in very large specimens. The largest was 8 meters in length.

During the second world war, a lot of Japanese were killed and (presumably) eaten by the saltwater croc in combat for Pacific islands. While hiding in the jungle, they were simply attacked and consumed.

The salt water croc lives in N. Australia, and can also live in the fresh water streams that feed into the ocean. The African croc lives only in fresh water.

There are different species of crocodiles that can live in saltwater and freshwater, respectively . .. I dunno about both in one species, though, at least one that can live their whole lives in fresh or salt and thrive in either. They can probably go for short jaunts in or out either way.

Yes they can as they breed by lungs. On the other hand I do not know about their shin, if it can withstand salt water or not - yes may be it can.
