For math:
You line up all digits. 1s, 10s, 100s, etc. It would not make sense to add one and tens.

1686 would not be correct.

Now if you were putting a column in alphanumeric order it would end up

etc.
because it starts at the left.

This helps because then you can tell how large the numbers are.
Example: 67, 103, 2006

67 has two digits
103 has three digits
2006 has four digits
