Downtown is where insiders shop. There are literally dozens of great stores near Pike's Market - some of the chain stores (Nordstrom and Sephora), some boutiques (Alhambra), some part of the large open market.

Seattle is so beautful most people don't waste time indoors if it's nice outside; the mall in Bellevue (south of Seattle) is v. posh if you're interested. In Renton (a little further south) there is a large Ikea store if you're interested in home furnishings.

Some historic stores to visit = Filson (founded during the Klondike gold rush) makes fabulous outdoor gear for hunting and extreme outdoors - it's worth a trip to their stop. Right across from Pike's market is the first Starbucks ever...still fairly rustic. The Music Museum (I think is overpriced) but if you are a music fan they have great stuff - music and gift items.

You have factory outlets all over the country as well as shopping malls. They are pretty much all the same. Go to Pikes Market and to the Space Needle. I've heard Pikes Market described as the best shopping in America. Yes, it is where the locals go.

There are factory outlet malls in Auburn & Marysville, both of which are about 45 minutes from Seattle. Here are the links:

http://www.supermall.com/ (Auburn, WA)
http://www.premiumoutlets.com/ (Marysville, WA)

Places to shop in Seattle are Northgate Mall & U-Village. You might also go to Tukwila (Southcenter Mall), which is on the way to Auburn or Lynnwood (Alderwood Mall), which is on the way to Marysville.

If you like shopping in the downtown area, I'd suggest Westlake Center and the surrounding area. It's home to Nordstroms, Macy's, etc.
