OK....the first thing you should do is arrange an equation, but it I guess you didn't learn that yet.

If you are looking for the percent you do this...

You divide the number which is part of 250 by 250. In this case 20/250. Now you just multiply the number you get by 100. That will make it easier. If that is hard for you to remember, when in doubt take the smaller number and divide it by the bigger number.

If you are looking for the number and they give you the percent you do this:

You take the 7% and you change it into decimal form. Which make it 0.07. Then you just divide the number they give you by 0.07. So you just take 35/0.07

turn the question into an equation:

20 = x(250)
x = 20/250

x = 0.08 (multiply by 100 to get percentage, or press % sign on calculator)

x= 0.08 * 100 = 8%

35 = 7% * x
OR
35 = 0.07 * x
x = 35/0.07

x =500

If you think about it this way, it may help.

If you buy something that is $100 at 10% tax, you are paying $10 in tax and the total you are paying for that item is $110.

250*x=20

==> x= 0.08 = 8%

0.07*y=35
==> y= 500

I used to have problems too. Now that I think about it in terms of money, I don't have problems anymore.

Hope this helps.
